What is “Deep Tissue”?
Ask a few therapists, and you'll likely get a few different answers. This common confusion stems from the fact that many spas and massage franchises advertise "deep tissue" primarily because it's a popular client request, often without clearly defining what kind of deep tissue they offer. This lack of clarity can lead to inconsistent experiences and client dissatisfaction. In my experience, the idea of deep tissue encompasses two main approaches: deep pressure and therapeutic work.
Often, when clients request deep tissue, they're primarily seeking intense pressure. They want to feel the work, hoping for relief from pain and tension, sometimes believing that more pressure equals better results. And sometimes this approach IS helpful. However, many therapists argue that this isn't true deep tissue massage, but simply a massage with a lot of pressure. Traditionally, deep tissue massage is a therapeutic, targeted approach that focuses on specific layers of muscle and fascia. It's less about the intensity of the pressure and more about precision and intention. This therapeutic deep tissue aims to address chronic holding patterns, restrictions, and imbalances within the deeper tissues, often using slower strokes, focused techniques, and a deeper understanding of anatomy and biomechanics. It's about working smarter, not necessarily harder.
The crucial question is: does the client desire intense pressure, or targeted therapeutic work? The answer hinges on their goal. Are they looking for a full-body massage with firm to deep pressure, or a more focused, clinical approach designed to address specific issues? This distinction separates a relaxing, generalized massage from a more therapeutic, outcome-oriented experience.
That’s not to say that deep pressure can’t be therapeutic or that therapeutic work can’t be relaxing. The key is communication and a shared understanding between therapist and client. Openly discussing goals, pressure preferences, and areas of focus ensures everyone is on the same page and contributes to a successful massage experience!
